Going completely indie with this week's tunes. Sadly, there hasn't been enough albums released this year for me to really love. OK I do love The War on Drugs' Lost in the Dream, that's about it! So no mixes for now. But hey, The Black Keys is releasing a new song called "Fever" on Monday! (New album Turn Blue out on May 13th.)

1. Starting with something upbeat...discovered this on Pitchfork's app when I was having insomnia one night.

2. Tiny little song FOREVER STUCK IN MY HEAD THOUGH.

3. Good mix of indie folk and house.

4. Ben Frost gathers Greg Fox (former black metal drummer), Thor Harris (yes there's a real person named Thor), and Shahzad Ismaily (percussionist with a master's in biochemistry wut) to create this pure bliss.

5. The Mac DeMarco we all know and love.

Catching up on some personal stuff. After not talking to my senior thesis director for like 2 months, I finally wrote a really lengthy long-overdue email! I pretty much read a book of a collection of essays related to my potential topic and told him my thoughts on it. Composing the email itself was a good process to sort out which specific angle I am going to take on this topic. I have some general ideas now. Yay! The thesis proposal is due in 5 weeks...

I am really enjoying drawing right now and my teacher is the best ever. He's super talented, inspirational, and laid-back. Just a good role model in general. I have learned a lot in his class about both doing art and living life. I'm doing some casual sketches when I'm bored and maybe one day I'll post some on here.

I also have another paper due for art & anatomy in 3 weeks...which I'll start this weekend. And my personal statement for school application needs to be done...So much stuff to write!

Feeling miserable at the moment, probably because of finals approaching and ongoing personal problems along the lines of low self-esteem, I thought it would be a good idea to update this little blog since I haven't had a personal post in forever. So this, on the left, is my schedule for my second semester junior year. I'm quite happy with how easily I got to pick my classes like a month ago and with how nicely balanced it turned out to be. On top of all these classes, I will also be working on my senior thesis proposal. I recently talked to my current art history professor, who is the chair of the art department, and he agreed to be my mentor for the thesis in a heartbeat. Like, literally. That one time, I just started mentioning senior thesis when we were talking and he just straight up asked me if I wanted him to be my mentor. So yeah. Glad it's all working out.
I bought a whole lot of stuff this past week so maybe I'll do a haul post soon (pretty much after finals...)! I won another giveaway last week (my luck this year is topsss) and my prize is a pair of boots. Can't wait until they arrive!

It's 12 in the morning. I still have a paper due tomorrow, a final exam, and like, numerous other things waiting to be done. Plus I'm living on 3 hours of sleep. Til next time! x

October 27, 2013

No time to organize my thoughts into proper words today, as life has been distressing but fruitful. Here are a couple of things that are on my mind right now.
  • Living off campus is like, heaven. I get my own room, make my own food, gym is a minute away, I can drive to anywhere I want whenever I want, bigger closet, I don't have to worry about disturbing people when I sleep super late or get up super early, more fridge space, I can go get fresh fruits all the time, COMFY BED, sometimes I can slack off and just use the dishwasher, the list goes on. I can get used to this freedom. The only main thing I dislike is that I can't go to the library freely any more. Like, when I need to stay up late and work on things but am not being productive at home.
  • I went to MUSC on Friday, learned a lot of new stuff that I wasn't expecting to learn about. I look forward to applying and being interviewed next year. But first, I must learn how to appeal to a typical interviewer who is a "middle-aged white male". Less than a year left let's gooo. (I have recently started practicing this thing called classy outfitting, including boob-hiding black sweaters and nude/classic red nails. I hope I survive before I die of boredom.)
  • Happiness. My bff Steph did a wonderful post on her take on happiness the other day. I thought I would do a reply post, but unfortunately...this happened. So I would like to quickly offer my thoughts. My happiness resides in things that I worked hard for and eventually achieved/obtained. In brief moments of heartbreak, I think about these things and they bring me back on my feet. When I lose hope, I think about how much I am actually in control of my current situations and put the trust in my abilities to overcome these obstacles. Most of the time, I succeed. And the cycle continues. Here, I must digress to another related topic. I may be a big procrastinator when it comes to studying for a test or completing assignments, but I always leave just enough time to study so I still end up being the best in class.
  • Cyber bullying is annoying as hell. Personally, I have never experienced it, but I've stopped reading comments on sites/grams/whatever for a long while now. It's totally believable yet still shocking to see how people can throw such rude words at others who they don't personally know. It makes you wonder how stupid most of the population is.
  • Cyber bullying leads to the seemingly endless discussion on women's body size. I must disagree with people who say "zero is not a size". Hate to break it to all the Ignorants, but in fact, zero is a size. Creating standardized sizing is actually a good thing for both manufacturers and consumers. So much easier to buy clothes when they have sizes...right?!!!@!#! Though, body shaming in any way is bad. Phrases like "eat a burger","someone feed her" or "she's a pig" are equally harmful. Can't people just be nice or say nothing at all?! In fact, I am trying to "lose weight" because eating in excess is always interfering with my ability to focus. I am not bothered by the numerical number I see when I step on a scale. I simply need to be healthier through better dieting and exercising. It should be called "get fit" not "lose weight". When people give me side-eyes when I say I don't eat brownies or cookies or cakes or ice-cream or fried food, I just want to say that it is for my own good and those foods are actually bad for you in many ways.
  • Desperately in need of new jeans (old ones have faded into a color that I hate), sweaters (what the hell, Columbia weather?!), decent thick cardi or soft blazer or faux leather jacket (basically, things I can layer on and take off easily in sauna-like classrooms at school), short skirts (because I'm a b**** and want to be leggy in winter), men's flannel shirts (because they make layering easy and I wouldn't look homeless and still be different), ankle boots (I actually feel like I have enough shoes but ankle boots are hot), more scarves (just because.)
  • I'm determined to start reading non-fictions!!!! I think it will be a good way for me to become an interesting "normal" civilized individual and appeal to *cough cough* potential interviewers.
  • This new season of Vampire Diaries is really good and The Originals....oh man, it's like there are two episodes of TVD in one week! Farewell, sleep!
Maybe I will elaborate on some of these topics later. But now, I must continue on my plan of world domination by first finishing off this art history paper with old school Britney Spears playing in the background. Peace out x

There it is, people. My week-long vacation in Cali/Nevada where I stayed at David & Steph's and a casino hotel, visited a whole lot of places, and enjoyed some delish food in restaurants AND homemade by David & Steph obvs (absolutely starving right now in my just-moved-in apartment while roommates are cooking in the kitchen). Photos in sequence are: plane -- subway to ferry -- ferry to Sausalito & at Sausalito -- downtown San Fran -- pastries at Tartine -- on the way to Lombard Street & there -- Baker's Beach & Golden Gate Bridge -- on the way from San Fran to Yosemite -- Yosemite sceneries (a whole bunch, including that one where I tried to piece three photos together) -- Lake Tahoe (cruise). It was a fantastic trip and I was really sad when we had to leave. :( Till next time!

I'm back!

I am finally done with DAT forever. Now it's the next stage of career planning -- looking at schools and writing my personal statement! I am glad I can finally resume posting again. I have so much to share!

Things that are happening on here soon:
  • tomorrow: my Pre-Fall picks
  • travel post (I'm going away for a week starting tomorrow)
  • haul post
  • a couple of discussion posts
  • new mood/inspiration board

Hopefully all of these will be up before September mix (aka September 1st) is up. Stay tuned!

I'll end the post with something really cool to share:

June 29, 2013

So this is what happened earlier this week: in my Prabal Gurung for TarGEt skirt and coincidental Harry Potter-themed necklaces (owl + Harry's scar), I agreed to take this picture after the occasion, with black hairband on arm. More appropriate accessory: a gun? (More stylish & as expensive alternative: {this} revolver clutch.) Though, I have to give props to my heels for making me look more put together than most people. We ended up eating burgers downtown. Meant to do a full photo diary, but obviously forgot to take pictures.

I am currently studying for the DAT. I had some plans but haven't gotten around to do posts on GoT + {Yeezus}. It's also the end of the month which means new mix. AND I've been keeping up somewhat with the fashion world (though, still need to finish the Fall/Winter 2013 shows and the recently out {Resort} shows), so more mood boards coming your way when I feel inspired enough. Sigh, so many posts, so little time. I don't know how {Margaret} manages it being a law student, super fashionista, creative director, travel enthusiast, and she takes her own photos on self-timer! So much respect for that. Lastly, I recently won her 20th birthday giveaway. So I've been totally eye-ing some {Givenchy} goodies.

Don't forget that Google Reader is going away first thing next month. Follow me and all the other lovely blogs on {bloglovin'}. There's a great app for that too!

May 8, 2013

Meant to post this last night, but I was too tired to move out of bed. I didn't take off my makeup before I slept. Tisk tisk.

So I moved out of Honors yesterday, and it was my last day living there. In fact, it was my last day living on campus, period. It was totally strange thinking about it. And I feel like I'm not gonna really miss it until I move in to my apartment in the fall. I decided that I should Instagram the whole day. I usually don't post intagram pictures on my blog because it defeats of the purpose of blogging, kinda. But this was a journey (sort of) that I want to share with you all.

It wasn't a particularly interesting day. And I definitely didn't Instagram as much as I wanted.

I had an exam this morning. It was stats, and it was my last one. I was mad at how they put my easiest one last (the one before this was on Friday.) So I had to wait this whole time to take it. But it allowed me to do all these random stuff before I left. I dressed for workout that morning, so I could go right after the test (as I've been going daily for a week and half). Scones from “The Buzz” is honestly the best food on campus. I got one to fuel my workout. (I need to learn how to make them this summer.) Well, the test was easy and I didn’t bother to check my ansers (first one to come out of a stats test, as always; and I needed a 60 to ace the class). So that was my happy face for being done with all my exams.

Got to the gym and did my gym routine - running, biking, rowing, and then walk really fast on this "green" treadmill. I really love that treadmill because 1. it doesn't require electricity; 2. you burn more calories on it; 3. you just feel better using it because of the curved shape. I actually dread running and definitely can't run on treadmills. So I do the indoor track for a mile and a couple more laps until I get tired/bored (told ya I hate running...). Then I bike for four, row for 2k, and walk on this treadmill really fast (like, 4 miles/hr) for one. It really isn't a hardcore workout, because 1. I can't do it...I suck at this; 2. I don't want to drain my whole day's worth of energy...But it is fun once I get pass the running.

Then I came back and showered and I obviously didn't know what kind of pictures I should've taken...And as usual, I spent forever on hair, body lotion, and makeup. At last, I was dressed for moving-out day. It was nice and sunny outside for once!!!! I went to say goodbye to my mentor, but he wasn't there. So I picked up lunch & went by OPPA (Office of Pre-Professional Advising). See, I got these free books at OPPA and that was awesome. I then managed to snap a picture of my gift for my roommate (when she was not in the room, of course, because I hadn't given it to her yet) - she will be going to Romania this Sunday and for the rest of May, I believe. I thought this would be a thoughtful gift so she could read it on the plane. And then it started randomly pouring outside...

Lastly, I was tearing the room apart for like 2 hours. I will definitely miss Ryan Reynolds on my door though. I left him there because this page (torn from a People magazine when I was in high school) is too beat up to keep any more. And before Jennifer left, we managed to snap a pic of our last day rooming together. I forgot to take a pic of the empty room, though, as I was too busy moving everything to the van.

Time definitely pasted too quickly for these last two years. I typed up a sentimental post last weekend, but decided it's too sad to fit this occasion. When I was done with exams, even though they were easy for me this semester, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. So no negativity for a while on this blog. :) I wanted to sum up some great things that happened:
  • I underestimated myself when I signed up for this semester's schedule, that's for sure. It is a good thing because I definitely had more than enough time to manage school stuff. Next semester, I am challenging myself though. But it's gonna be awesome.
  • I was a beast at ochem so I will be a TA next semester! I didn't know where the motivation came from though. Becasue for ochem 1 in the fall, I was totally studying last minute for every exam, and got by because the final was easy.
  • And because of this random motivation from ochem, I became overachieving. (Is this a good thing? I guess.) So I didn't procrastinate that much at all for all my classes.
  • I got off meal plan. Yes, that is one of the greatest decisions I've made.
  • I signed a lease! It made me feel like an adult. And I look forward to not having to live in a "cell".
  • I read some books! A very un-Eileen move, really.
  • Well, at the end of the semester, I finally started working out.
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. How did yall's semester go? Are you looking forward to the next two years of college (if you're gonna be a junior, obviously)? You better be.

What are you up to?

I'm rereading The Great Gatsby in preparation for the new movie. I don't think I appreciated Fitzgerald this much until now. The weird thing is, every time his name is mentioned, Tom Hiddleston's portrayal of him in Midnight in Paris appears in my head. Haha. But the hair and everything was perfect though.

These are the beauty products that I am currently loving (for real). My absolute favorite spring-time nail polish is definitely OPI You're Such A Budapest (the little one) from their Euro Centrale Collection. It's a pale blue-leaning lilac that is super flattering on my skin tone. My hands are somewhat tanned and it's a weird color because I'm Asian. And usually, pale colors make my hands look like mannequin hands. I suggest all Asians try out this color because it is won-der-ful! (I feel like it's universally flattering though.)

I recently got my hands on a NARS blush...yes, I finally splurged. I got Gaiety, which looks barbie pink in the pan, but it translates very well on my cheeks. This subtle pink lightens up my cheeks which are usually blotchy red. Less pink colors like Super Orgasm make my skin tone look funny and make me look older, which I dislike. So pink is the way to go! I also use NYX Liquid Illuminator in Sunbeam, which is a dupe for Benefit High Beam, on my cheeks. It just lights everything up!

I am also loving L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Golden Emerald. It is such a perfect...golden emerald! Super amazingly pigmented and long-lasting, even on my oily lids! If you get this, I suggest you apply it over a base to make it more vibrant.

I never tried any lip pencils because I am afraid of what I've always imagined to be a dry/hard texture. But NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover proved me wrong. It applies PERFECTLY, and is moisturizing. I would definitely recommend it to everyone. NARS also have some new colors out recently, in both "gloss" and "satin" formulations. These are definitely products that totally changed my mind about a certain type of makeup.

I can NEVER find exfoliators that get rid of all the flakiness on my face. But this Caudalie one comes close to perfect. It is not a gentle one. But it works. And it does not irritate my skin. And after massaging, my face feels super soft and clean and almost flake-free!

BEACH WAVES. This Charlotte Ronson A Perfect Mess is...perfect. I wash my hair and towel dry it a little bit. And then I spray some onto different sections of my hair and distribute it evenly. Then I put it in a bun and leave it like that for as long as I can. If I'm in a hurry, I just blow-dry it. And voila - it adds some beautiful volume to my pin-straight fine hair. I haven't tried other beach-wave products but this one does the job. Unfortunately, it is discontinued, I believe. :\

Lastly but not least, I got another NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, this time in Alaska, because I find my old St. Moritz slightly too dark. Alaska is actually the second lightest shade in the spectrum, and there are 11 shades. I am not pale at all...I don't know how super pale white people can find a shade that fits...Anyhow, I like how natural this looks on me, as I really despise the I-have-foundation-on-my-face look. Another favorite thing about this product - it has SPF 30 in it! Sunscreen is essential in aging-prevention. :) I don't know how well this performs on oily-skinned people, as mine is more like combination type. And I always powder my nose...so.

So, I did not mean to make this post into a makeup rant. But I really did find some beauty holy grails recently. And I feel bad for not publicly appreciating them as I've spent some of my hard-earned money on them...

Moving on. I AM READY FOR SUMMER! Even though I will be spending my 3 months following a rigid routine mostly studying. But I am still pretty excited. Since I bought my new bikinis, Columbia has been absolutely horrible to me. There has not been sun in two freaking weeks! As you have probably figured out, I've been chilling in these last weeks of my sophomore year, because I have easy finals. And I really wanted to go sunbathing ("tanning" sounds tacky) on the horseshoe (if you don't go here, then horseshoe is the historic part of the campus with lots of grass and trees and beauty). I even bought a new beach towel (pictured in the first photographs, the blue striped one)! And of course, next Wednesday, the day after I move out, it will be all warm and full of sunshine here. -.-

Since I can't lay around doing nothing, I decided gym would be a good alternative. So I've been hitting the Strom everyday for over a week. I also got this new Rachel Rachel Roy tank for that purpose. Fashion-wise, I've been loving black items as they look good against my skin. Plus black is a classic color that never goes out of style. This tank also features this neon Native American head that makes it rave-ready. I love it.

Another thing that I love recently, is this little cute notebook Steph bought me in Taiwan when she went...last summer? I like to plan and write down things I need to do. And this is a perfect size. After I finish this one (which is not even remotely close), I will probably get a Moleskine or something. But I absolutely adore this.

I just have one more exam next Tuesday. And then I am ready to go home. And then David and Stephanie are gonna come to gvegas to visit me! :D It's gonna be a good week.

Also, if you haven't, check out my may mixtape! I am very proud of it, and it's got lots of listens on 8tracks. :)

April 18, 2013

It's 80 degrees out everyday. What should I wear?

Old readers know that I'm obsessed with Zara. I used to have a "what I want from Zara's catalog" post every week. Clearly, this obsession hasn't faded. So here's a plateful of summer jam (lol!) that I've come up with this time. It's all about being super laid-back but fun, with skin-showing here and there, all while looking collected.

Outfit #1 is like, Rumi-Neely 101...because she actually has this shirt. I adore her style and simply believes she's the queen of looking chill and hot.

Outfit #2 I love tank tops. And for those slightly breathier days, a colorful print scarf goes perfectly with them. Those white wedges are sick.

Outfit #3 features one of my favorite trends - fashion sneakers. I love shoes that are either extremely uncomfortable (4inch or higher plz) or extremely comfortable (sneakers, super soft penny loafers, etc.) Wear them with a crop top to be playful, or with this see-through draped top (and a choker!) to be more dressed-up.

Outfit #4 features my current favorite summer time colors - black and silver. As much as I love white clothing, they make my skin tone look funny. But black works so much better. Silver pointy pumps are also necessary.

Outfit #5  THEM KNEE HIGH GLADIATOR SANDALS. 'Nough said.

Outfit #6 I don't usually like black & red outfits. But these cranes on shorts are just irresistible. Also, if you don't like red lipsticks, wear them on your neck instead.

Two more weeks of school left OMG. I honestly cannot wait. I just finished my last big test of my sophomore year. And I have another week to waste before finals roll around. My last final is a gonna be a joke. And for the other two finals that I have to take, I have pretty decent grades in those classes so I don't have to be super stressed out about them. I like this but I also hate how empty I feel without all the work that need to be done. I am also dealing with some other personal struggles besides emptiness. But more on that later. Have a good weekend y'all. Go get drunk.

Little things bring me down. I wish I could be like Elena in TVD so I can just turn off all my emotions and be a bitch.

But I can't. I'm too nice.

I'm too safe. I don't want to embarrass myself.

People say the more you put yourself out there, the less it huts.

But all I see is hate.

Why are people so difficult? We are too complex for our own sakes. But also too simple-minded.

And in the end, I feel like shit when I have to deal with people.

This semester just needs to end already. I have too much free time to do nothing, to think about shit that I don't even need to worry so much about.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's real tired of winter weather. Can't wait until this week is over so I can get my spring nail mail + new skirt.

A quick update on previous posts: I did finish reading The Hobbit! In fact, I did most of the book in a day. It was actually pretty entertaining! Now I finally know what's gonna happen in the next two movies. :P For the record, I kind of hate reading because either anxiety builds up and I can't wait that long to read about what happens next, or it's too boring I give up. But this book (combined with my current goal of trying to live as independently from Internet as possible) might have made me want to read more. :OOOOOOO Take a few minutes and let that sink in for ya...

I also watched Game of Thrones season premiere from this past Sunday. Not a particularly eventful episode, but the quick take-away from it is:
  • I'm glad Jon Snow is not being a pussy
  • I kinda like Margaery Tyrell now
  • Where the hell is Arya?! I better get some update on this next episode
